About this tool

Someone sends you a RAR or 7z file and your phone or work laptop has no idea what to do with it. This tool opens it right here in the page. You see every folder and file with its size and, for ZIP, TAR and RAR files, its date. Tap a file to preview it: pictures, text and code, the first page of a PDF, and sound or video play straight away.

It reads ZIP, RAR (both the older RAR 4 and current RAR 5), 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ, ISO disc images and single .gz files. The unpacking is done by libarchive, the open-source engine behind many desktop archive apps, running inside your browser. Your archive is never uploaded; it is read from your own device and the files stay there.

Password-protected ZIP files work, both the classic kind and the stronger AES kind. You can browse the list first; the tool asks for the password when you open or save a locked file, and if it’s wrong it tells you plainly rather than handing you broken files. Passwords on RAR and 7z archives can’t be unlocked in a browser yet, and the tool says so up front instead of failing halfway.

How to use Open ZIP, RAR & 7z Files

  1. Press “Choose an archive” (or drop the file onto the box). Big archives show a progress bar while they’re read.
  2. Browse the folders, or type in “Search files and folders” to find something by name. “Hide system files” keeps Mac and Windows clutter out of the way.
  3. Tap any file to preview it on the right (below the list on a phone). “Save this file” keeps just that one.
  4. Tick files or whole folders, then press “Save selected”. Several files come as one ZIP with their folders kept.
  5. Or press “Save all as ZIP” to get everything in a ZIP that any computer or phone can open. In Chrome and Edge, “Save to a folder…” writes the files straight into a folder you pick instead.
Example

A client sends “brand-assets.rar” (48 MB) and you only need the logo. Open it, type “logo” in the search box, tap “logo-final.png” to check it’s the right one, then press the download arrow on its row. You get one 300 KB PNG and skip the other 47 MB.

Tips and good to know

  • Only need one or two files from a huge archive? Preview and save them individually, which is quicker than saving everything.
  • Phones can’t save a folder of files in one go, so several files arrive as a single ZIP. On iPhone, tap that ZIP in the Files app to unpack it.
  • Leave “Hide system files” on: the “__MACOSX” folder and “._” files are leftovers from Macs and are useless on other computers.
  • If the password is right but files still fail, the archive was probably cut short during the download. Download it again and retry.

Frequently asked questions

Is my archive uploaded anywhere?

No. The archive is read and unpacked by your own browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it’s safe for private documents, and it works with no account.

Is it free, and how big can the archive be?

It’s free with no limits on how many archives you open. Size is limited by your device’s memory: up to 1 GB opens without fuss on most computers, between 1 and 2 GB you’ll see a warning first, and above 2 GB a browser can’t hold the file, so use a desktop app instead.

Does it work on my phone, and offline?

Yes, it works in phone browsers such as Safari and Chrome. Several files are saved as one ZIP because phones can’t save a folder in one go. The page and its unpacking engine (about 1 MB, fetched when you open your first archive) need a connection; your files never go online.

Can it open password-protected archives?

Password-protected ZIP files, yes, when you know the password: both the classic and the AES kinds work. Locked RAR and 7z archives can’t be unlocked here yet, because the engine has no RAR or 7z decryption; you’ll see the file list where possible and a clear message. There is no password cracking.

Can I make a ZIP or RAR file here?

This tool is for opening archives. It does make a ZIP when you save several files, so it can turn a RAR or 7z into a ZIP, but it can’t create RAR files, which only the official WinRAR app may do.

Which formats can’t it open?

Split archives (.part1.rar, .7z.001), password-protected RAR and 7z files, a lone .bz2 or .xz file that isn’t a TAR archive, and Mac DMG disk images. Very large archives over 2 GB are too big for a browser.
