About this tool

Near the end of a term two questions matter: where do I stand right now, and what do I need on the final? This tool answers both. In the “Weighted grade” tab you list your assessments, each with its mark and its weight, and it shows your weighted average, how much of the course is already graded, how many points you have banked and the best grade you can still finish on.

The “Final exam” tab works backwards. Give it your grade now, how much the final is worth and the grade you want, and it tells you the mark you need, rounded up so following it never leaves you a fraction short. Below that is a table with the mark needed for every grade on your scale, so you can see straight away which grades are safe, which are within reach and which are gone. A “try a score” box shows what any exam mark would do to your course grade.

Pick US letter grades, Australian university grades (HD, D, C, P), UK degree classes, or plain percentages. Marks can be typed as 85 or as points like 45/50. It all runs in your browser, and your list is only kept on this device.

How to use Grade & Final Exam Calculator

  1. Choose your grade scale at the top: US letter, Australian uni, UK degree or percentage only.
  2. In “Weighted grade”, type each assessment’s name, mark (85 or 45/50) and weight. Use “Add assessment” for more rows and the × to remove one.
  3. Read your grade so far, the weight still to come and your best possible finish.
  4. Tap “Plan the rest” (or open the “Final exam” tab), check your grade now and the final’s weight, and type the grade you want.
  5. Read the mark you need and the table for every grade, try a score in “If I score on the final”, and tap “Copy summary” to save it.
Example

You are on 78% going into a final worth 25% and want 80% overall. You need 86% on the final. Scoring 70% instead would leave you on 76%, and even 0% keeps you at 58.5%.

Features

  • Weighted average from any number of assessments, with marks as percentages or points such as 45/50.
  • Weight graded, weight still to come, points earned and best possible finish, with a bar showing points earned, lost and still in play.
  • Mark needed on the final for your target grade, rounded up to one decimal place.
  • A table of the mark needed for every grade boundary, marking which are already secured and which are out of reach.
  • A “try a score” box to see the course grade any final mark would give you.
  • Grade scales: US letters (A+ to F), Australian university (HD, D, C, P, F), UK degree classes (First to Fail) or percentage only.
  • One tap carries your current grade and remaining weight from the weighted tab into the final exam tab.
  • Your assessment list and chosen scale are remembered in this browser for next time, and both tabs have copy buttons.

Tips and good to know

  • Check your course outline for the exact weights. If they don’t add up to 100%, the tool tells you, which often means a piece of assessment is missing.
  • Grade boundaries differ between schools and universities. The scales here are the common ones; if your course uses different cut-offs, use “Percentage only” and type your own target.
  • Some courses need a minimum mark on the final exam itself (a hurdle) as well as an overall pass. This calculator can’t know that, so check your course rules.
  • If the mark you need is very high, plan for it early: past papers under timed conditions raise exam marks more than rereading notes does.

Frequently asked questions

Are my marks uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser. Your assessment list is saved only in this browser on this device so it is there next time, and it is never sent anywhere. “Clear all” removes it.

Is it free? Are there any limits?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up, and you can add as many assessments as you like.

Does it work on a phone or offline?

Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android and any modern browser on a laptop. You need a connection to open the page, then all the sums happen on your device.

How is the mark needed on the final worked out?

Mark needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a fraction. For 78% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 80%: (80 − 78 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 86%.

What if the mark I need is over 100%?

Then that target can’t be reached on the final alone. The tool says so and shows the best grade a perfect score would give you, and the table shows which lower grades are still within reach.

How do I enter a mark like 45 out of 50?

Type 45/50 (or 45 out of 50) in the Mark box. It is turned into 90% for the average, and the percentage and letter grade appear under the box.

Can I use it for GPA?

This tool works with percentages within one course. To turn letter grades and credits across several courses into a GPA, use the GPA Calculator.
