About this tool
Markdown Editor is a calm place to write anything that uses Markdown: a README for a project, notes, a blog post, documentation or a message for a forum. Type on the left and the preview on the right shows the formatted result on every keystroke, with both sides scrolling together so you never lose your place. On a phone, Write and Preview become tabs.
It understands the Markdown people actually use, including the GitHub extras: headings, bold and italic, links and images, nested lists, task lists with tick boxes, quotes, code blocks with a language label, tables with column alignment, strikethrough and web addresses that turn into links by themselves. A toolbar and the usual shortcuts (Ctrl or ⌘ with B, I and K) mean you don’t have to remember the symbols, and pressing Enter inside a list starts the next item for you.
Your writing stays yours. The converter runs entirely in your browser, and your draft is saved only in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick up later. Any HTML typed into the text is shown as plain text rather than run, and links that try to run code are removed, so a pasted file can’t do anything sneaky. When you’re finished, copy the HTML, or download a .md file or a ready-styled .html page.
How to use Markdown Editor
- Start typing in the left-hand box, or press “Open .md file” (or drop a file on the editor) to load one.
- Use the toolbar or shortcuts: Ctrl/⌘+B for bold, Ctrl/⌘+I for italic, Ctrl/⌘+K for a link.
- Watch the preview. Choose “Write”, “Split” or “Preview” above the editor; on phones, switch between Write and Preview.
- Check the word count and reading time under the editor. Your draft saves itself as you type.
- Press “Copy HTML”, “Download .md” or “Download .html”. “Clear draft” starts afresh.
Typing “- [x] Book venue” and “- [ ] Send invites” on two lines gives a task list with one ticked box; “| Name | Score |” over “| --- | ---: |” starts a table with the scores lined up on the right.
Features
- Live preview with scroll syncing between editor and preview, matched block by block rather than by rough percentage.
- Headings, emphasis, strikethrough, inline code, fenced and indented code blocks, quotes, horizontal rules and line breaks.
- Bulleted and numbered lists, nested lists and GitHub-style task lists.
- GitHub-style tables with left, centre and right alignment.
- Links, reference-style links, images, and plain web addresses and emails that become links automatically.
- Safe output: raw HTML is shown as text and javascript: links are stripped, so pasted Markdown can’t run scripts.
- Toolbar with keyboard shortcuts, and lists and quotes that continue when you press Enter.
- Word count, character count and reading time at about 230 words a minute.
- Automatic draft saving in your browser, with a Clear draft button.
- Copy HTML, download .md, or download a standalone .html page with its own light and dark styling.
Tips and good to know
- Pictures from other websites show as a labelled box in the preview here, because this site only loads images from itself. They appear normally in the HTML you copy or download.
- The draft lives in this browser only. Private windows and clearing your browsing data remove it, so download a .md file for anything you want to keep.
- End a line with two spaces, or a backslash, to force a line break inside a paragraph. A blank line starts a new paragraph.
- Press Enter twice on an empty list item to end the list.
- Write the language after the opening fence, as in ```js, and it is added to the HTML as class="language-js" so syntax highlighters on your site can colour it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my writing uploaded anywhere?
No. The Markdown is turned into HTML in your browser, and the draft is stored only in your browser’s own storage on this device. Nothing is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.
Is it free? Is there a length limit?
It is free with no sign-up. There is no set length limit; files up to 10 MB can be opened, and long documents update the preview after a short pause in typing so the page stays smooth.
Does it work on a phone or offline?
Yes. On a phone the editor and preview become Write and Preview tabs. After the page has loaded, writing, previewing and downloading all work without a connection.
Which Markdown does it support?
It follows CommonMark, the common standard, for the core syntax, plus the GitHub additions people rely on: tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links. Raw HTML inside the Markdown is not run; it is shown as text for safety.
What is the difference between Download .html and Copy HTML?
Copy HTML gives you just the converted content, ready to paste into a website, email builder or CMS. Download .html saves a complete web page with its own styling that you can open in any browser, print or share.
Why didn’t my HTML tag work?
For safety the editor never runs HTML typed into the text, so something like <b>bold</b> appears exactly as typed. Use Markdown instead, for example **bold**.
Will I lose my work if I close the tab?
Not usually: the draft is saved in this browser as you type and comes back next time. It is lost if you use a private window or clear your browsing data, so download a .md copy of anything important.
