About this tool

Remove Silence finds the quiet gaps in a recording and takes them out. It tightens a podcast or interview, removes the long thinking pauses from a lecture, shortens dead air in a voice note, and trims the silence before and after a song or sound effect.

Open a file and every pause the tool will cut is shaded red on the waveform, with the total time saved shown underneath. Set how quiet counts as silence (a level is suggested for each recording from its background noise) and how long a pause must be before it is touched. Then choose: shorten each pause to a set length so speech still breathes, cut pauses out completely, or only trim the start and end.

Disagree with one? Tap it on the waveform, or untick it in the list, and it stays. Play the result to hear how it flows, with the playhead following along on the original. Every join is crossfaded over 10 ms so it doesn’t click. Everything runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.

How to use Remove Silence

  1. Press “Choose a file” or drop an audio or video file on the box. The waveform appears with the pauses already marked in red.
  2. Choose “Shorten pauses”, “Remove pauses” or “Trim start & end only”.
  3. Adjust “Silence is quieter than” until the red stretches match the gaps you hear (“Suggest” goes back to the recommended level), and set “Only pauses longer than”.
  4. Tap any red stretch to keep it, or use the “Pauses found” list. Press “Play result” to hear the tightened recording.
  5. Pick a format under “Save as” and press the button (“Shorten pauses”, “Remove silence” or “Trim silence”), then download.
Example

A 32-minute interview has 140 pauses longer than 0.75 s, averaging 2 seconds each. Shortened to 500 ms, each saves 1.5 s: 140 × 1.5 s = 3.5 minutes, so it comes out at 28:30 and still sounds natural.

Features

  • Pauses shaded on the waveform, with the count, the time saved and the new length always on show.
  • Three modes: shorten pauses to 150 ms – 1 s, remove them keeping a little padding, or trim only the start and end.
  • A silence level suggested from each recording’s own background noise, adjustable from −70 to −20 dB.
  • Minimum pause length from 0.2 to 5 seconds, so short breaths between words are left alone.
  • Keep any pause by tapping it, or with the tick-box list (with “Cut all” and “Keep all”).
  • Play the result before saving, with the playhead tracking the original waveform.
  • 10 ms crossfades at every join, so cuts don’t click.
  • Save as MP3, M4A, OGG, WAV or FLAC, or the same format as the original.

Tips and good to know

  • For speech, “Shorten pauses” to 400–500 ms sounds far more natural than removing them completely.
  • If breaths or room hum are being treated as sound, move the slider right; if quiet words are being cut, move it left.
  • Raise “Only pauses longer than” to 1 s or more for music, where short rests belong to the rhythm.
  • Recorded with background music? Silence detection needs real quiet, so it works best on voice-only tracks.
  • Use “Trim start & end only” to tidy sound effects and ringtones without touching the middle.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. The recording is analysed, cut and saved by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.

Is it free? Is there a length limit?

It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. There is no set length limit; long recordings are held in memory while you work, so very long files may be too much for an older phone.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?

Yes, in an up-to-date Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge, and pauses are easy to tap with a finger. You need a connection to open the page; the editing happens on your phone.

How does it decide what is silence?

It measures the loudness of every hundredth of a second. Any stretch quieter than your chosen level that lasts at least your minimum length is a pause. Clicks shorter than 50 ms don’t break a pause in two.

What is the difference between shortening and removing?

Shortening leaves every long pause at the length you choose, so the rhythm of speech survives. Removing cuts the pause out, keeping only a little padding either side of the sound.

Will my file lose quality?

The cutting is done on the full-quality sound, which is then encoded once. Choose WAV or FLAC to keep every sample, or MP3, M4A or OGG at the quality you pick.
