About this tool
Make Background Transparent removes a flat background colour from a picture and leaves those pixels see-through. It is the quick fix for a logo on a white box, a signature photographed on paper, a product shot on a plain backdrop, or a frame grabbed from a green-screen video.
Tap the background in the live preview to pick its colour, or let the tool read it from each picture’s corners. Tolerance decides how close a colour must be to count as background, and Edge softness fades the boundary so outlines stay smooth. “Clean colour fringes” takes the old background colour back out of those soft edges, so a logo cut from white doesn’t carry a pale halo onto a dark page. There is a separate green and blue screen mode with spill removal, and the reverse too: fill see-through areas with a solid colour.
Unlike AI background removers, this works by colour, so it is exact and predictable on graphics, scans and studio shots, and it never guesses. Everything runs in your browser: your pictures are not uploaded, and there is no watermark or sign-up.
How to use Make Background Transparent
- Tap “Choose files”, drop pictures on the box, or paste one. You can add up to 30.
- Choose what to do: “Colour → transparent”, “Green / blue screen” or “Transparent → colour”. For a plain white background, “White background → transparent” does everything in one click.
- Tap the background in the Original preview to pick its colour, or tick “Pick it from each picture’s corners”. Adjust Tolerance and Edge softness while watching the Result.
- Check the edges against Checks, White, Black or Pink, then pick PNG or WebP under “Save as”.
- Press “Make transparent”. Download each picture from its row, or all of them as one ZIP.
A logo on a white background: press “White background → transparent”, and a moment later logo-transparent.png has a clear background with smooth, halo-free edges.
Features
- Three modes: colour to transparent, green or blue screen (chroma key), and transparent to a solid colour.
- Live before-and-after preview; tap the original to pick the colour. Chrome and Edge also offer “Pick from screen”.
- Automatic colour from each picture’s corners, so a batch with different backgrounds still works.
- Tolerance and Edge softness sliders for clean, smooth outlines.
- “Only background touching the edges”, so white inside the subject (eyes, highlights, the middle of an O) is kept.
- “Clean colour fringes” removes the halo the old background leaves on soft edges.
- Green and blue screen keying with adjustable colour spill removal for hair and edges.
- Check the result on checks, white, black or pink; save as PNG or WebP (JPG too when filling).
- Batch up to 30 pictures, download singly or as one ZIP. Reads JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, BMP, SVG and ICO.
Tips and good to know
- If bits of background stay behind, raise Tolerance a little. If parts of your subject start to vanish, lower it or tick “Only background touching the edges”.
- JPG photos have slightly blotchy backgrounds. A tolerance of 10–20 with some softness usually catches it all.
- For a signature or a logo with letters, leave “Only background touching the edges” off, so the paper inside loops and letters goes too.
- Photos of people on a busy background need the AI Background Remover instead; this tool works best on one flat colour.
- Save as PNG or WebP to keep transparency. Need a JPG? Use “Transparent → colour” to put a solid background back.
Frequently asked questions
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. All the work happens in your browser on your own device. Your pictures are never sent to AroraTools or anyone else, and they are cleared when you close the page.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes, free with no sign-up and no watermark. You can do up to 30 pictures at a time. Very large photos may be too big for a phone’s memory; a computer handles more.
Does it work on iPhone and Android, and offline?
Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Tap the preview to pick a colour. The page needs the internet to open, then the work happens on your device. Safari can’t save WebP, so use PNG there.
How do I make a white background transparent?
Add your picture and press “White background → transparent”. It removes white with a little tolerance and smooth edges. If some off-white stays, raise Tolerance and press “Make transparent” again.
What is the coloured halo around my cut-out?
Edge pixels are a mix of your subject and the old background, so they keep a tint of it. “Clean colour fringes” works out how much background each edge pixel holds and takes it back out.
Why did parts of my subject disappear too?
They are close in colour to the background. Lower Tolerance, or tick “Only background touching the edges” so only background joined to the picture’s border is removed.
When should I use the AI Background Remover instead?
When the background is a real scene rather than one flat colour, such as a person in a room. This tool is better for logos, scans, product shots and green screens, where it is exact.
