About this tool
Background Remover finds the main subject of a photo, keeps it, and makes everything behind it see-through. Save the cut-out as a transparent PNG or WebP, or put it straight onto a plain colour, a soft gradient, a blurred copy of the photo or a picture of your own, with an optional shadow underneath.
When the AI gets a bit wrong, fix it yourself. The erase and restore brush paints away leftovers or brings back a missed ear, with size, softness, zoom and undo. Edge sliders shrink, grow or soften the outline, and fringe removal cleans the coloured halo the old background leaves in hair. Size presets give 1080 px, 4K or a square shop photo with even space round the product.
All of this runs inside your browser with an open-source AI model called ISNet. It downloads from this site the first time (about 44 MB) and is then kept in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device, and there is no watermark, account or credit system.
How to use Background Remover
- Tap “Choose a photo”, drag one onto the box, or paste one. The first time, wait for the model to download.
- Wait a few seconds while it finds the subject, then drag the round handle to compare before and after.
- Press “Touch up by hand” to fix mistakes: pick Erase or Restore, set the Size and Softness, and paint over the picture. Tick “Show removed areas” to see what was cut away.
- Choose a “Background”, a “Shadow” and a “Size”. Open “Edges” to shrink, grow, feather or remove colour fringe.
- Pick PNG, WebP or JPG under “Save as” and press the Download button.
A 3000 × 4000 product photo with “Square shop photo”, a white background and a soft shadow becomes a 2000 × 2000 file with the product centred and 10% space on every side.
Features
- Automatic cut-out, on your graphics chip (WebGPU) where the browser allows: about 1–3 seconds on a recent laptop, roughly 10–15 seconds on the processor, longer on phones.
- Erase and restore brush with size, softness, undo and redo (⌘Z / Ctrl+Z), working at full resolution even when zoomed up to 8×. “Show removed areas” tints the cut-away parts red over the original.
- Edges: Fine (hair, fur) or Smooth, shrink or grow, feather, and colour fringe removal that un-mixes the old background from half-see-through edge pixels.
- Backgrounds: see-through, any colour, a two-colour gradient (top to bottom, diagonal or round), the photo blurred, or your own picture.
- Drop shadow under the subject: soft or strong.
- Sizes: original, 1080 px or 4K (3840 px) on the long side, or a 2000 × 2000 square shop photo with adjustable space round the subject. Crop to the subject trims empty edges.
- Saves PNG or WebP (both keep see-through areas) or JPG at 92% quality when there is a background.
- Opens JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF (first frame), SVG and ICO. Photos over 16 megapixels are scaled to 16 megapixels.
Tips and good to know
- It works best when the subject is clear, in focus, and stands out from what is behind it. Glass, very busy scenes and gaps between arms can trip it up — that is what the brush is for.
- Zoom in with + before brushing small details: the brush size is measured on screen, so a zoomed-in brush paints finer lines.
- A light halo round dark hair on a new background? Tick “Remove colour fringe”, or shrink the edge by one or two steps.
- Changing the edge type redoes the edges but keeps your brush strokes.
- 4K and square sizes can enlarge a small photo. The note under the options says when, as it may look soft.
- Safari cannot save WebP, so that choice is greyed out there.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model and the brush run inside your browser on your own device. Your photo is never sent to AroraTools or anyone else. The only download is the model itself, from this site.
Is it free? Are there any limits?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and you get the full-size result. You work on one photo at a time; photos over 16 megapixels are scaled to 16 megapixels.
Does it work on iPhone and Android? Offline?
Yes, in an up-to-date browser, and the brush works with a finger. It is slower on phones. You need the internet to open the page and, the first time, to download the model.
The AI missed a bit or kept part of the background. Can I fix it?
Yes. Press “Touch up by hand”, choose Restore to paint missing parts back from the original photo, or Erase to wipe leftovers away. Undo steps back one stroke at a time.
How do I make a product photo for an online shop?
Choose a white or light gradient background, a soft shadow and the “Square shop photo” size. You get a 2000 × 2000 picture with the product centred; set the space round it with the slider.
How do I get a transparent PNG?
Leave Background on See-through and save as PNG or WebP. See-through areas show as a checkerboard in the preview and stay see-through in the file.
Why does it download 44 MB the first time?
That is the AI model that recognises the subject. Running it on your device is what keeps your photo private. It is saved in your browser, so you only download it once.
