About this tool

Sale tags are designed to sound bigger than they are. This discount calculator works out what you actually pay. Type a price and a percentage or an amount off, and you get the sale price, the saving and, if your country adds sales tax at the till, the final total. A bar shows at a glance how much of the price is left.

The other tabs cover the deals that trip people up. Stacked shows why “20% off, then an extra 10%” is 28% off and not 30%, step by step, with the single discount it equals. Buy X get Y handles “3 for 2” and “buy one get one half price”, tells you the real price per item, and warns you when you’re one item short of a free one. Bulk / tiered prices an order against quantity breaks, the all-units way or the incremental way, and spots when buying a few more costs less. Original price works backwards from a sale price, or tells you what percent off a “was £149, now £99” label really is. Compare deals puts two packs side by side and says which is cheaper per 100 g, per kg, per litre or per item, even across grams, ounces and pounds.

It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing you type leaves your device.

How to use Discount Calculator

  1. Pick a tab: Sale price, Stacked, Buy X get Y, Bulk / tiered, Original price or Compare deals, and check the currency.
  2. On Sale price, type the original price, choose “% off” or “Amount off”, and enter the discount or tap a quick button such as 25%.
  3. Add a sales tax rate if your shop adds tax at the till; leave it empty where prices already include tax.
  4. On Stacked, type each discount in the order it is applied, and tap “Add another discount” for up to six.
  5. On Bulk / tiered, type the quantity and normal price, set each break (“From 50 units: 9 each”), then choose “All units” or “Incremental”.
  6. Read the answer and the working underneath, then tap the copy button to share it.
Example

A $100 jacket at 20% off with an extra 10% off at the till costs $72, not $70: $100 − 20% = $80, then $80 − 10% = $72. That is the same as a single 28% discount.

Features

  • Sale price from a percentage or a fixed amount off, with the saving and the discount as a percentage.
  • Optional sales tax added after the discount, with the tax and the total to pay.
  • Up to six stacked discounts, every step written out, the equivalent single discount, and a plain explanation of why the percentages don’t add up.
  • Buy X get Y free or at a percentage off, for any quantity, with the effective discount, the real price per item and a nudge when you qualify for more.
  • Bulk / tiered pricing with up to eight quantity breaks set as a price each or % off, all-units or incremental, with the total, price per unit, saving, the cost the other way, a price list for every break and a tip when buying more costs less.
  • Reverse discount: the original price from a sale price and its percentage.
  • Was / now: the true percentage off, or a warning when the “sale” price is higher.
  • Compare two deals by unit price across items, g, kg, oz, lb, ml, litres and US fluid ounces, with optional extra discounts on either pack.
  • Thirty currencies, picked from your browser’s region, and copy buttons on every result.

Tips and good to know

  • Stacked discounts give the same price in any order, so a coupon applied “first” is no better.
  • In “3 for 2” deals the free item is often the cheapest one. This tool assumes every item costs the same, so with mixed prices your real saving is usually a little smaller.
  • A big pack isn’t always cheaper per gram: Compare deals catches it.
  • With all-units pricing, just under a break can cost more than the break itself: 95 units at $9 is $855, but 100 at $8 is $800. The Bulk tab points this out.
  • If sales tax is already in shelf prices, as with GST and VAT, leave the tax box empty.

Frequently asked questions

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. The sums run in your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, saved or shared.

Is it free? Any limits?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up. You can use it as much as you like, with up to six stacked discounts at once.

Does it work on a phone and offline?

Yes, it works in Safari on iPhone and in any modern browser on Android. Once loaded the sums happen on your device, handy in a shop with poor signal.

Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount comes off the already-reduced price. On $100, 20% off gives $80, and 10% of $80 is $8, leaving $72. That is 28% off in total. The Stacked tab shows this for any discounts you enter.

What is the difference between all-units and incremental tiers?

With all-units pricing, reaching a break gives every unit the lower price: 120 units at $8 is $960. With incremental pricing, only the units inside each band get its price, like tax brackets: 49 at $10, 50 at $9 and 21 at $8 make $1,108. The Bulk tab shows both.

How do I work out the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal: $60 after 25% off came from $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
