About this tool
This profit margin calculator is built for shop owners, makers, resellers and anyone setting a price. In the Margin & markup tab, type any two of the five values (cost, selling price, profit, margin or markup) and the other three are worked out instantly. Know your cost and the margin you want? Type those two. Know the price and the markup? That works too. The boxes you typed are highlighted and the worked-out ones are labelled, so it is always clear which is which.
Price from target turns a cost and a target margin or markup into a selling price, then rounds it up to a price that looks right on a shelf, such as one ending in .99. A ladder shows the price at eight common margins side by side. Bulk price list does the same for a whole range: paste item names and costs from a spreadsheet and get a full price list to copy or download as a CSV file.
If you charge GST or VAT, pick whether your prices include tax or have it added on. Margins are always measured on the price before tax, since tax belongs to the government, not to you. A plain explainer of margin versus markup, with the conversion formulas and a quick reference table, sits below the calculator. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use Profit Margin & Markup
- Pick your currency and, if you charge it, the GST / VAT setting and rate.
- In Margin & markup, type any two values, for example the cost and the selling price. The other three fill in straight away.
- Switch to Price from target to turn a cost and a target margin into a selling price, and choose how to round it.
- Use Bulk price list to paste many items with their costs and set one target for all of them.
- Press Copy result, Copy table or Download CSV to take the figures with you.
An item that costs 60 and sells for 100 makes 40 profit: a 40% margin (40 of every 100 taken) but a 66.67% markup (40 added on top of 60). To reach a 40% margin on a cost of 60 including 10% GST, the shelf price is 110.

Tips and good to know
- Margin can never reach 100%, because that would mean the item cost nothing. Markup has no ceiling: a 300% markup is a 75% margin.
- A common mistake is adding a markup percentage when you meant a margin. Adding 30% to a cost of 70 gives 91, which is only a 23% margin. To earn a 30% margin you need to charge 100.
- Type costs before tax if you can claim the tax back on your purchases, which most registered businesses can.
- Rounding always goes up, so your real margin is never below your target. Check the actual margin figure after rounding.
- For the bulk list, the cost should be the last number on each line. A line like “Pack of 6, 4.50” reads the cost as 4.50.
Frequently asked questions
Are my prices and costs uploaded?
No. Every calculation, including the bulk list, happens in your browser on your own device. Nothing you type or paste is sent anywhere.
Is it free? Are there any limits?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. The bulk list handles up to 5,000 items at a time, and you can run it as often as you like.
Does it work on a phone, iPhone or offline?
Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android and all modern desktop browsers. After the page loads, the sums run on your device without the internet. Wide tables scroll sideways on small screens.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Both use the same profit. Margin divides it by the selling price; markup divides it by the cost. Cost 60 and price 100 give a 40% margin and a 66.67% markup.
How do I convert margin to markup?
Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin), using decimals. A 40% margin is 0.4 ÷ 0.6 = 0.6667, a 66.67% markup. The other way, margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup).
How do I find the selling price for a target margin?
Divide the cost by one minus the margin. For a cost of 60 and a 40% margin: 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100. The Price from target tab does this for you and can add tax and round the result.
Is margin worked out before or after GST or VAT?
Before. The tax you collect is passed on to the government, so it is not profit. When prices include tax, the calculator removes it first, then measures the margin on what is left.
