About this tool
This GST and VAT calculator does the two jobs every small business, freelancer and shopper needs: adding tax to a price, and taking tax out of a price that already includes it. Choose your country and the rate fills itself in, from Australia’s 10% GST and New Zealand’s 15% to the UK’s 20%, 5% and 0% VAT, the standard rate of all 27 EU countries, every Canadian province’s GST, HST, PST or QST, and India’s 5%, 18% and 40% GST slabs. Rates were checked in October 2026. For the US, where sales tax depends on the state and city, you type your own rate.
Removing tax is where most people slip. Taking 10% off $110 gives $99, which is wrong; the right answer divides by 1.1 to get $100, so the GST is $10. The working is written under every answer. For combined taxes, the calculator splits the tax into its parts, such as CGST and SGST in India or GST and QST in Quebec.
Below the main calculator, you can list several items with different rates, like an invoice with standard and zero-rated lines, and get a summary by rate plus totals to copy as text or paste into a spreadsheet. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use GST / VAT Calculator
- Choose “Add tax” if your price is before tax, or “Remove tax” if it already includes tax.
- Type the price. The currency is chosen from your country; change it underneath if needed.
- Pick your country and rate from the list, or type any rate into the % box.
- Read the result, with the amount excluding tax, the tax and the amount including tax. Tap “Copy breakdown” to share it.
- For an invoice or receipt with several rates, fill in the item list underneath, choose whether those amounts include tax, and copy the totals.
Remove tax from $110 at Australia’s 10% GST: $110 ÷ 1.1 = $100, so the GST is $10. Adding 10% GST to $100 gives $110 again.
Features
- Add or remove tax, and switching between the two keeps the same price so you can check both ways.
- Checked presets for Australia, New Zealand, the UK (20%, 5%, 0%), all 27 EU standard rates, Switzerland, Norway, Singapore, Japan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
- Canada by province: GST 5%, HST 13%, 14% or 15%, and GST plus PST, RST or QST, with each part shown.
- India’s GST slabs since 22 September 2025 (0%, 5%, 18% and 40%), split into CGST and SGST.
- Any custom rate up to three decimal places, such as a US state and city sales tax of 8.875%.
- Up to 40 line items with their own rates, tax per line, a summary by rate and grand totals.
- Amounts worked out in whole cents, so the amount excluding tax plus the tax always equals the total.
- Copy as plain text or as tab-separated columns for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
Tips and good to know
- To find the tax inside a price, divide the price by 1 plus the rate, then subtract. For 20% VAT, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100, so the VAT is £20. A quick shortcut for 20% VAT is one sixth of the price; for 10% GST it is one eleventh.
- Preset rates are standard rates. Food, books, children’s clothes and other goods often have reduced or zero rates; type the right one in the % box or the item list.
- In the item list, the rate box suggests the rates for your chosen country as you type.
- Rates change. Nova Scotia’s HST fell to 14% in April 2025 and India rebuilt its GST slabs in September 2025, so check with your tax office before filing a return.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything I type uploaded?
No. All the sums run in your browser on your own device. Prices, item names and totals are never sent anywhere or saved.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. The item list takes up to 40 lines, and you can use it as often as you like.
Does it work on my phone and offline?
Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and in any modern browser on Android. You need a connection to open the page, but after that all the sums happen on your device.
How do I calculate GST from a total that includes GST?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Australia, $110 ÷ 1.1 = $100, so the GST is $10. In New Zealand, divide by 1.15, so the GST is three twenty-thirds of the total. Choose “Remove tax” and the calculator does it for you.
How up to date are the rates?
The preset rates were checked against published rate tables in October 2026. Only rates we could confirm are included. Tax rates do change, so for anything official, confirm the rate with your tax office.
Why can’t I choose a US state?
US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so two addresses in the same state can have different rates. Choose “United States” and type the combined rate shown on your receipt or your state’s website.
