About this tool
This typing test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Choose a timed test of 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or a fixed number of words, then just start typing: the clock begins on your first key. Each letter turns white when it is right and red when it is wrong, a glowing caret shows where you are, and your speed and accuracy update live above the text.
When you finish, you get more than one number. You see your net speed in words per minute, your raw speed before mistakes, accuracy, and consistency, which shows how steady your pace was. A chart plots your speed second by second with red marks where mistakes happened, and a list shows the keys you missed most, so you know exactly what to practise. Your best score for each kind of test is kept, so you can watch yourself improve.
The practice text is our own: common English words, or short original sentences, with punctuation and numbers if you want a harder test. It runs entirely in your browser, works with phone keyboards and input methods for other languages, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to use Typing Speed Test
- Choose “Time” or “Words” at the top, then the length: 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or 10, 25, 50 or 100 words.
- Pick “Common words” or “Sentences”, and tick “Punctuation” or “Numbers” for a harder test.
- Click or tap the text and start typing. Press the space bar after each word; wrong letters turn red.
- Read your result: WPM, accuracy, raw speed, consistency, the speed chart and the keys you missed most.
- Press “Next test” for fresh text or “Repeat this text” to try the same words again. Tab then Enter also starts a new test.
If you type 250 characters of correct words, spaces included, in 60 seconds, that is 50 words a minute (a “word” is counted as five characters). If you also typed 20 wrong characters along the way, your raw speed is 54 and your accuracy about 93%.
Features
- Timed tests of 15, 30, 60 and 120 seconds, and word tests of 10, 25, 50 and 100 words.
- Two kinds of text written for this site: common English words, or short sentences, with optional punctuation and numbers.
- Live WPM and accuracy, per-letter colouring, extra letters shown in red, and a smooth caret.
- Three backspace rules: fix the current word (and earlier words only if they have a mistake), fix anything, or no fixing at all.
- Results with net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, consistency, time, and counts of right, wrong, extra and missed letters.
- A speed-over-time chart with your raw speed each second and red marks for mistakes.
- Your most-missed keys, worst first, including the space bar.
- Personal bests for each kind of test, saved only in this browser, with a button to clear them.
- Works with phone and tablet keyboards, autocorrect turned off, curly quotes treated as straight ones, and IME input.
Tips and good to know
- Aim for accuracy first. Mistakes cost far more time than a slightly slower pace, and speed builds once your fingers stop correcting themselves.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard, and keep your fingers resting on the home row (ASDF and JKL;).
- Shorter tests flatter you: most people manage a higher WPM over 15 seconds than over 2 minutes. Compare like with like; your bests are kept separately for each length and option.
- Use the missed-keys list to choose what to practise. If the same two letters keep appearing, slow down for words that contain them.
- Results under five seconds or below 50% accuracy are not saved as bests, so a stray key press can’t spoil your record.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything I type uploaded?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser. What you type, your results and your personal bests stay on your device; nothing is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.
Is it free? Is there a limit on tests?
It is free with no sign-up, and you can take as many tests as you like.
Does it work on a phone or tablet, and offline?
Yes. Tap the text to bring up your keyboard and type as normal. Once the page has loaded, tests keep working without an internet connection.
How is WPM worked out?
A word is counted as five characters, including spaces. Your WPM counts only the characters of words you typed correctly, plus the spaces after them, divided by five and by the minutes taken. Raw WPM counts every key you pressed, right or wrong.
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type around 35 to 45 words per minute. Fifty to 70 is comfortably quick for office work, and over 80 is fast. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as raw speed.
What does consistency mean?
It shows how even your pace was from second to second. 100% would mean every second was equally fast; a lower figure means bursts and pauses. Smoother typing usually leads to higher speeds over time.
