About this tool
Word Search Maker turns your own list of words into a ready-to-print puzzle. Type a spelling list, a topic’s vocabulary, the names of everyone at a party or the clues for a team quiz, and the grid builds itself as you type. Each word is hidden once in a straight line and the empty squares are filled with letters, so there is exactly one place to find it.
It is made for teachers, parents, tutors and anyone running a quiz night. Choose Kids for big, easy puzzles that only run across and down, Normal for diagonals as well, or Hard for words that can run backwards with filler letters taken from your own words, which makes false starts much more common. Every puzzle has a code, so you can make the same one again, and New puzzle shuffles it in a click.
You can print it as a PDF with an answer key on the second page, save it as a picture, or solve it on screen by dragging across a word with a mouse or finger. Your list never leaves your device: the puzzle is built and the PDF is drawn inside your browser, with no sign-up, no limits and no watermark.
How to use Word Search Maker
- Type a title and your words in “Your words”, one per line or separated by commas (up to 60).
- Pick a difficulty: Kids, Normal or Hard. Fine-tune which ways words can run under “Words can run”.
- Leave the grid size on “Fit my words”, or choose your own rows and columns.
- Press New puzzle until you like the layout. Try it on screen: drag from the first letter of a word to the last.
- Choose your paper size, then press Download PDF (with an answer key page) or save a PNG.
Twelve sea-themed words on Normal make a 12 × 12 grid. Download PDF gives two A4 pages: the puzzle with a tick-box word list, then the same grid with every word highlighted.

Tips and good to know
- For young children, keep words to eight letters or fewer and stick to Kids: across and down only, in capitals.
- Words inside other words (like “ear” in “heart”) are fair game, but they confuse younger solvers, so leave one of them out.
- If a word will not fit, switch the grid back to “Fit my words” or allow diagonals; long words need room in at least one direction.
- Hide the word list for a harder challenge: give clues out loud and let the class find the answers.
- Note the puzzle number shown under the title. Type it back into that box with the same words and settings and you get the identical grid again.
Frequently asked questions
Are my words uploaded anywhere?
No. The puzzle is built by code running in your browser, and the PDF and PNG are drawn on your device. Your list is only remembered in this browser so it is still there next time; the Clear button empties it.
Is it free, and are there any limits?
It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Each puzzle takes up to 60 words and grids up to 30 by 30 squares, which already fills an A4 page.
Does it work on a phone or tablet, and offline?
Yes. On a phone or iPad you can make, play and download puzzles; to solve on screen, drag a finger across a word or tap its first and last letter. Once the page has loaded you can keep making and solving puzzles offline; the PDF maker is fetched the first time you press Download PDF, so do that once while online.
Why does it say some of my words did not fit?
Each word must sit in one straight line without clashing with other words. With a small chosen grid, few directions or very long words, some cannot be placed. The message names them; make the grid bigger, allow more directions or shorten the list.
Can I make the same puzzle again later?
Yes. Every puzzle has a number, shown under the title and printed at the bottom of the page. Type that number back into the box with the same words and settings and you get the identical grid, which helps when you need a spare copy.
How do I print a word search with an answer key?
Tick “Add an answer key page” and press Download PDF. Page one is the puzzle for handing out; page two shows the same grid with every word highlighted in colour, ready for marking.
