About this tool
This page opens Passport Photo Maker set to the Australian passport. The Australian Passport Office’s photo guidelines (passports.gov.au, checked 8 October 2026) say photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with the face from chin to crown 32–36 mm. The tool makes the standard 35 × 45 mm size and draws a guide for that 32–36 mm face height, so getting the framing right takes seconds.
Be clear about what the office accepts. Printed photos must be less than six months old, colour prints made by dye sublimation (not an inkjet printer) on heavy glossy paper of at least 200 gsm, against a plain white or light grey background, with no retouching. The office recommends a professional photo provider and does not recommend online photo services or apps. Online renewal is different again: it uses a photo code from an approved provider, which this tool cannot give you.
So use this to frame and size a good photo, then have the print sheet printed on glossy photo paper by a shop with a dye-sublimation printer. The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded, which avoids the identity risk the office warns about.
How to use Australian Passport Photo (35×45 mm)
- “Photo for” already reads “Australia passport · 35 × 45 mm”. Leave it there.
- Press “Choose a photo”. Use one taken straight on against a plain white or light grey wall, with your shoulders in view.
- Drag the photo and use “Zoom” until the top of your head touches the orange line and your chin sits in the blue band. Use “Straighten” if your head leans.
- Pick a “Print quality” and the “Print sheet” paper, for example 6 × 4 in, which is what photo kiosks print.
- Press “Make photo”, then “Download print sheet” to take to the printer, or “Download photo” for the single image.
At 300 dpi the photo is 413 × 531 pixels (35 × 45 mm), and a 6 × 4 inch sheet holds eight copies with cut marks. Two are needed with a paper application.
Features
- Starts on the Australian passport size: 35 × 45 mm, with a 32–36 mm chin-to-crown guide.
- Face outline and centre line to keep your face straight and centred.
- Drag, pinch or scroll to zoom, and straighten up to 20° either way; arrow keys and + and − work too.
- Single photo at 300 or 600 dpi as a high-quality JPG with the resolution written into the file.
- Print sheets for 6 × 4 in, 15 × 10 cm and A4, with as many copies as fit and cut marks.
- Other countries and a custom size are still in the list if you need a different document.
Tips and good to know
- Do not replace or edit the background: the office lists an edited background as unacceptable. Stand in front of a plain light wall instead.
- Daylight from a window in front of you gives even light with no shadows on the face or the wall behind.
- Remove glasses unless you cannot for medical reasons; the guidelines do not allow them otherwise.
- Print at 100% (“actual size”), never “fit to page”, or the photos come out the wrong size.
- Ask the printing shop whether it uses a dye-sublimation printer and glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Your photo is never sent to AroraTools or anyone else.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes, it is free with no watermark and no sign-up. Make as many attempts as you like.
Does it work on my phone, and offline?
Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge on iPhone and Android. The page needs the internet to open, but the photo work is done on your device.
What size is an Australian passport photo?
The Passport Office’s guidelines, checked on 8 October 2026, say 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with the face 32–36 mm from chin to crown. This tool makes 35 × 45 mm.
Can I print it at home?
Not for a passport. The guidelines ask for prints made by dye sublimation, not an inkjet printer, on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. Take the print sheet to a shop or kiosk that prints that way.
Can I use it for online passport renewal?
No. Online renewal retrieves your photo with a code from an approved photo provider. This tool cannot create that code.
Will the Passport Office accept my photo?
This tool gets the size and face height right. Lighting, background, expression and print quality are judged by the office, so read the official guidelines before you print.
