About this tool

Sometimes the sound is all you want from a video: a talk or lecture to listen to on a walk, a song from a performance you filmed, a voice message that arrived as a video, or a soundtrack to edit. MP3 is the format every device plays, so “MP4 to MP3” is one of the most searched conversions there is.

This page opens Extract Audio set to MP3 at 192 kbps. Add the video, press “Save as MP3”, and the sound is decoded and re-encoded as an MP3 right in your browser, then you can listen to it on the page before downloading. The picture is simply left out, so the MP3 is a small fraction of the video’s size.

It is not only for MP4: MOV videos from an iPhone, WebM and MKV work the same way. You can still pick another quality or format, including M4A, WAV, or Original, which copies the sound exactly as it is stored with no re-encoding. Nothing is uploaded; the whole job happens on your device.

How to use MP4 to MP3

  1. Tap “Choose a video” or drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file on the box.
  2. The line above the tool confirms the job: MP3 at 192 kbps. Change “Quality” if you like.
  3. Press “Save as MP3”. A long video shows a progress bar with a Stop button.
  4. Listen to the result on the page, then press “Download audio”.
Example

A 6-minute MP4 lecture of 85 MB becomes an MP3 of about 8 MB at 192 kbps, which plays in any podcast app or car stereo.

Features

  • Opens set to MP3 at 192 kbps; 128, 256 and 320 kbps are also offered.
  • MP3 encoding runs on your device with the LAME MP3 encoder, downloaded from this site only when you save an MP3.
  • Reads MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos.
  • Shows the length, the kind of sound inside and an estimated MP3 size before you save.
  • A plain message if the video has no sound track, rather than an empty file.
  • M4A, WAV and an untouched copy of the original sound are still a tap away.

Tips and good to know

  • A higher bitrate cannot add quality the video’s sound never had; 192 kbps suits nearly every video.
  • For a phone video, “Original” or M4A keeps the sound with no loss at all, since it is usually AAC already. Choose MP3 when a device or app insists on it.
  • Only want a part? Save the MP3, then press “Trim the audio” to cut it to length.
  • Videos with more than one sound track, such as some films, give you the main track.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the video and makes the MP3 on your own device. Nothing is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.

Is it free? Is there a size limit?

It is free, with no sign-up, watermark or daily limit. There is no fixed size limit; very long videos depend on your device’s memory and are quickest on a computer.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?

Yes, in an up-to-date Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge. The page needs the internet to open and, the first time, to fetch the MP3 encoder from this site; the converting happens on your device.

Can I convert a MOV or WebM video to MP3?

Yes. MOV, WebM and MKV work exactly like MP4. The page is named after the most common case.

What MP3 quality should I pick?

192 kbps, the default, is hard to tell from the original. Choose 128 kbps for speech to save space, or 320 kbps for high-quality music.

Why does it say my video has no sound?

The file has no audio track at all, which happens with some screen recordings and silent clips. There is nothing to save, so no empty MP3 is made.
