About this tool

Extract Audio saves the sound from a video as its own audio file. Use it to keep the music from a clip, turn a recorded talk or lesson into something you can listen to on a walk, pull a voice memo out of a screen recording, or grab the soundtrack for editing.

MP3 is the default because it plays everywhere. You can also choose M4A (AAC), which sounds better at the same size and suits Apple devices; WAV, which is uncompressed and handy for audio editors; or Original, which copies the sound exactly as it is stored in the video with no re-encoding at all. When the video’s sound is already AAC, M4A is a straight copy too, so it is instant and loses nothing.

Before you save, you see the length, what kind of sound the video holds and an estimate of the file size for the format you picked. Formats a particular video or browser can’t produce are greyed out with the reason, and a video with no sound track gets a plain message instead of an empty file.

It all happens in your browser. The video is never uploaded, and there is no account, watermark or daily limit.

How to use Extract Audio from Video

  1. Tap “Choose a video” or drop a video onto the box. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV all work.
  2. Pick the format: MP3, M4A, WAV or Original. The note under the choices explains each one for your video.
  3. For MP3 or M4A, pick a quality. 192 kbps is the default and hard to tell from the source.
  4. Press the save button, for example “Save as MP3”. Long videos show a progress bar with a Stop button.
  5. Listen to the result on the page, then press “Download audio”.
Example

A 6-minute MP4 lecture of 85 MB becomes lecture-audio.mp3 of about 8 MB at 192 kbps, ready for any phone or podcast app.

Features

  • MP3 at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, encoded on your device with the LAME MP3 encoder, loaded only when you save an MP3.
  • M4A (AAC) at 128 to 256 kbps, or copied without re-encoding when the video’s sound is already AAC.
  • WAV (16-bit PCM) for editing.
  • Original: the untouched soundtrack, saved as .m4a, .mp3, .opus, .ogg, .flac or .wav depending on what the video holds.
  • Shows length, sound format and an estimated file size before saving.
  • Clear messages for videos with no sound, and for formats a browser can’t make.
  • Plays the audio on the page before you download it.

Tips and good to know

  • Choose Original or M4A for phone videos: the sound is usually AAC already, so it is copied with no loss at all.
  • A higher bitrate can’t improve the sound beyond what the video had. 192 kbps is plenty for most videos; 320 kbps only helps with high-quality music.
  • WAV files are big, about 10 MB per minute for stereo. Use them only if an editor needs them.
  • Firefox can’t create AAC, so M4A is greyed out there unless the video’s sound is already AAC. MP3 and WAV work in every modern browser.
  • Only want part of the sound? Save it here, then press “Trim the audio” to cut it to length.
  • Videos with more than one sound track (some films) give you the main track.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The sound is read and saved by your browser on your own device. Your video is never sent to AroraTools or anyone else.

Is it free? Are there limits?

Yes, it is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. There is no length or size limit beyond your device’s memory.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?

Yes in up-to-date Safari on iPhone and iPad and Chrome on Android. The page needs the internet to load, but the extracting happens on your device.

How do I convert MP4 to MP3?

Choose your MP4, leave the format on MP3, pick a quality and press “Save as MP3”. A few seconds later you can play and download the MP3.

Which format should I choose?

MP3 if you just want it to play everywhere. M4A for better sound at the same size, especially on Apple devices. WAV for audio editing. Original to keep the exact sound from the video with no change at all.

Why does it say my video has no sound?

The file has no audio track at all. Some screen recordings, muted phone clips and GIF-style videos are saved without one, so there is nothing to extract.

Does extracting reduce the sound quality?

Original, and M4A from AAC sound, are exact copies with no loss. MP3 and other M4A files are re-encoded, which at 192 kbps or more is very hard to hear. WAV keeps everything the video’s sound had.
