About this tool
Video to GIF turns a short part of a video into a looping animation for a chat, a forum post, a slide or a bug report. Choose a video, drag the handles to the moment you want, and the tool builds it frame by frame.
You control what matters: frame rate for smoothness, width for size, and the start and end for length. Speed it up or slow it down, play it backwards, or make a boomerang that goes there and back. Add top and bottom captions in one of 18 bundled fonts; the caption shows on the preview exactly as it will look.
Sites and chat apps often cap GIF size. Pick “Under 2 MB”, “Under 5 MB” or “Under 8 MB” and the tool tunes the colours, frame rate and width for you, checking each step with a real sample encode, then tells you what it chose. A size estimate is shown for every change.
Besides GIF, it can save animated WebP (much smaller, full colour, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox) and animated PNG (lossless, but big). GIF holds at most 256 colours per frame; you can lower that for a smaller file, use one shared palette, or add dithering for smoother gradients.
Everything happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. No watermark, no account.
How to use Video to GIF
- Tap “Choose a video” or drop a video onto the box. The first 5 seconds are chosen to start with.
- Drag the two handles to the part you want, or type Start and End times, and press “Play part” to check it.
- Pick “Save as” (GIF, WebP or APNG), Frame rate, Width, Speed and Plays (forwards, backwards or boomerang).
- Optionally type a Top or Bottom caption and choose its Font, Size and Colour. Set a Size limit if the GIF must stay small.
- Press “Make GIF” (or Make WebP / Make APNG), check the result on the page, then press Download.
A 4-second clip from a phone video, 15 frames per second, 480 px wide, with “Under 5 MB” chosen: the estimate says 7 MB, so the tool lowers it to 128 colours and 12 fps and makes a 4.6 MB GIF.
Features
- Size limit: under 2, 5 or 8 MB, with colours, frame rate and width tuned automatically and a re-check after making it.
- Top and bottom captions in 18 bundled fonts, three sizes and three colour styles, with a live preview over the video.
- Speed from 0.5× slow motion to 3×; play forwards, backwards or as a boomerang.
- Animated WebP and animated PNG as well as GIF.
- Frame rates from 5 to 25 per second and widths from 160 px up to the video’s own width (up to 1280 px).
- GIF colours from 256 down to 16, a per-frame or shared palette, and optional ordered dithering.
- Size estimate from real sample frames, updated with every change.
- Up to 30 seconds of video and 900 frames, made in a background worker with a Stop button.
Tips and good to know
- Halving the width makes a GIF about four times smaller; dropping from 15 to 10 frames per second saves about a third.
- If the place you are posting accepts WebP, use it: it is often less than half the size of the same GIF and keeps full colour.
- A boomerang doubles the frames, so it doubles the size too. Pair it with a shorter part.
- Short, bold captions read best. Anton or Bebas Neue in white with a black edge is the classic meme look.
- For screen recordings and cartoons, try “One shared palette”: flat colours look clean and the file is smaller.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to make the GIF?
No. Your browser reads the frames and builds the animation on your own device. The video never leaves your computer or phone.
Is it free? Any limits?
Yes, it is free with no watermark and no sign-up. Each animation can use up to 30 seconds of video and 900 frames, which keeps the file and your device’s memory in check.
Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?
Yes in up-to-date Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.4 or later). Safari can’t write WebP, so there you get GIF or APNG. The page needs the internet to open; the animation is made on your device.
How do I make a GIF under 2 MB?
Choose “Under 2 MB” in Size limit and press Make GIF. The tool lowers the colours, then the frame rate, then the width until a sample encode fits, and says what it changed. If it still can’t fit, pick a shorter part.
Can I add text to the GIF?
Yes. Type a Top text, a Bottom text or both, and choose the font, size and colour. The caption is drawn onto every frame, exactly as the preview shows it.
Should I choose GIF, WebP or APNG?
GIF plays everywhere. WebP is far smaller with full colour and works in all modern browsers and most apps. APNG is lossless and plays in browsers, but the files are large, so keep it short and narrow.
Why do the colours look a bit different?
A GIF can only use 256 colours in each frame, so similar shades are merged. “Best colours per frame” keeps this small, and dithering smooths out banding. WebP and APNG don’t have this limit.
