About this tool
Edit PDF Bookmarks gives a long PDF the side-panel contents that make it easy to find your way: click “Part B” and the reader jumps straight there. Open a PDF and its existing bookmarks appear as a tree beside a large view of the pages, so you can see where each one lands. Rename them, drag them into a new order, nest one inside another to make chapters and sections, or remove the ones you don’t need.
You don’t have to type them all. “Make from headings” reads the size and weight of the text on every page and suggests a tree from the lines that stand out: the biggest become chapters, smaller ones sections and sub-sections, up to three levels, while running headers and footers repeated on every page are left out. “One per page” gives every page its own bookmark, named after its biggest line. Open several PDFs together and the tool joins them into one file with a bookmark for each, keeping each file’s own bookmarks inside it.
Saving writes a proper PDF outline and tells readers to open with the bookmarks panel showing. The rest of the file stays as it was. It all happens in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded.
How to use Edit PDF Bookmarks
- Tap “Choose PDFs” and pick one PDF, or several to join into one.
- Press “Make from headings” or “One per page” for a ready-made tree, look at the preview, then press “Use these” or “Add to mine”.
- To add one yourself, go to the page, scroll to the spot and press “+ Bookmark this view”, then type its title.
- Pick a bookmark to edit it: “In →” and “← Out” nest it, the arrows or dragging its handle move it, and “Click on the page…” sets exactly where it opens.
- Press “Save PDF with bookmarks”, read the check line, then press “Download PDF”.
A 48-page report with no bookmarks: “Make from headings” finds 6 chapters and 19 sections. Rename two, drag the appendix to the end, save, and the result line reads “Saved · 25 bookmarks in 2 levels… Checked: the saved file has all 25.”
Features
- Reads existing bookmarks with their nesting, open or closed state, bold, italic and colour, and where each one lands on its page.
- Add, rename, delete, reorder and nest bookmarks to any depth, by dragging (mouse or finger) or with the buttons.
- Set where a bookmark opens: the place you’re looking at, a spot you click on the page, or the whole page.
- Make from headings: up to three levels from text size and weight, ignoring running headers and footers.
- One bookmark per page, named after each page’s biggest line, and one per file when you join several PDFs.
- Choose which bookmarks start opened, and whether readers open with the bookmarks panel showing.
- Keyboard: arrows move through the tree, Alt + arrows reorder and nest, Enter renames, Delete removes, Ctrl/⌘ Z undoes.
- Reads the saved file back and checks the number of bookmarks and levels.
Tips and good to know
- Make from headings works from the text’s size, so it suits documents with real headings, like reports, manuals and theses. A scan is only a picture of each page; run Searchable PDF (OCR) first, or add the bookmarks by hand.
- Closed bookmarks keep long trees tidy: untick “Show its sub-bookmarks when the PDF opens” for big chapters.
- When you join PDFs, each file’s own bookmarks move under the file’s bookmark, still pointing at the right pages. Fill-in form fields in the later files may not carry across; fill them in first.
- Bookmarks that open a web link are kept as they are. Other rare bookmark actions (such as opening another file) are kept as titles but no longer do anything.
- Password-protected PDFs can’t be changed. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened, edited and saved by your browser on your own device. Nothing about it, or its bookmarks, is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up and no watermark. There is no limit on pages or bookmarks.
Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?
Yes. On a phone the bookmark list sits under the page; drag a bookmark by its ⠿ handle or use the buttons to move and nest it. The page needs the internet to load, then the work happens on your phone.
What is the difference between bookmarks and a table of contents?
A table of contents is printed on a page. Bookmarks (the PDF “outline”) live in the reader’s side panel, are always one click away, and don’t change the pages at all. Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge and most phone readers show them.
Will my bookmarks show in Adobe Acrobat and Apple Preview?
Yes. They are saved as a standard PDF outline. The tool also marks the file to open with the bookmarks panel showing, which Acrobat and many other readers follow; untick the option if you don’t want that.
Can I put several PDFs together with a bookmark for each?
Yes. Choose them all at once (in the order you want). They are joined into one PDF, each file gets a bookmark named after it, and its own bookmarks go inside that one.
