About this tool

Unlock PDF takes the password protection off a PDF when you already know the password. Bank statements, payslips, tax notices, phone bills and school reports often arrive locked with your date of birth or an account number, which means typing it every time you open the file, and many other tools — including our merge, split and compress tools — can’t work with it at all. Unlock it once and the copy you download opens straight away.

It also handles the other kind of protection: files that open freely but are set to block printing, copying text or editing. Those have no password to type. The tool spots them and removes the restrictions in one click.

This is not a password cracker. It cannot find, guess or bypass a password you don’t have, and it won’t try. If the password is wrong, it simply says so.

Everything happens in your browser. The file and the password stay on your device and are never sent anywhere. The pages are not redrawn or turned into pictures, so the text stays sharp, searchable and copyable, and links, bookmarks and form fields are kept.

How to use Unlock PDF

  1. Tap “Choose a PDF” or drop your file onto the box. The tool checks what kind of protection it has.
  2. If it needs a password, type it into the Password box. Press “Show” to check what you typed.
  3. Press “Unlock PDF”. For files that only block printing or copying, press “Remove restrictions” instead — no password needed.
  4. Press “Download PDF” to save the unlocked copy. Your original file is not changed.
Example

A 4-page bank statement locked with your date of birth: type the password, press Unlock PDF, and download statement-unlocked.pdf, which opens with no password and lets you copy the transaction list.

Features

  • Removes the open password when you type it, or the owner password if that is the one you have.
  • Removes print, copy, edit, comment and form-filling restrictions, and lists which ones the file had.
  • Works with the standard PDF password protection: RC4 (40 and 128-bit), AES-128 and AES-256.
  • The unlocked copy keeps real text: nothing is printed to images, so it stays searchable and the file size barely changes.
  • Before you download, the new file is reopened with no password to check the lock is really gone.
  • Clear messages for a wrong password, a file that isn’t locked, and protection that can’t be removed.
  • The decryption runs in a background worker, so the page stays responsive with big files.

Tips and good to know

  • Passwords are case-sensitive. Bank and government PDFs often use a date of birth in a set format (such as DDMMYYYY) or part of an account number; the email or letter that came with the file usually says which.
  • If the file was protected by someone else, only remove the password if you’re allowed to. Unlocking doesn’t change who owns the content.
  • PDFs locked to a digital certificate (common in some company systems) instead of a password can’t be unlocked here.
  • Digital signatures inside a locked file will usually show as invalid after unlocking, because the file has been re-saved.
  • Once unlocked, the file can go straight into Merge, Split, Compress or Sign PDF using the links that appear after the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. The file is unlocked by your browser on your own device. Neither the PDF nor the password is ever sent to AroraTools or anyone else.

Can it unlock a PDF if I don’t know the password?

No. It only removes a password you type in. It does not guess, crack or bypass passwords. The one exception is a file with print or copy restrictions but no password to open it — those restrictions can be removed without a password.

Is it free? Are there any limits?

Yes, it is free with no sign-up and no watermark. It unlocks one PDF at a time, as many times as you like. Very large files are limited only by your device’s memory.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome, choose the PDF from Files or your downloads, type the password and download the unlocked copy. The page needs the internet to load, but the unlocking happens on your phone.

Will the unlocked PDF still have selectable text?

Yes. The pages are decrypted, not redrawn, so text, links, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were.

Why does it say my password is wrong?

Check Caps Lock, spaces and the exact format the sender asked for, such as a date of birth with or without slashes. Press “Show” to see what you typed.

What kinds of PDF protection does it support?

The standard password protection used by Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, macOS Preview and most banks: RC4 and AES up to 256-bit. It can’t open files protected with a digital certificate or a company rights-management system.
