About this tool
Placeholder Image Generator makes stand-in pictures for designs, mock-ups and web pages that are waiting for the real photos. Type a width and height or pick one of more than thirty presets, from a 1200 × 630 link preview to a 728 × 90 ad banner or a 1080 × 1920 story, and the preview updates as you go. By default the image shows its own size, so anyone looking at the layout knows exactly what picture belongs there.
You can go well beyond a grey box. Choose a solid colour, a linear or radial gradient, any of eighteen bundled fonts, your own label with the size filled in automatically, and an optional cross, checker, stripe, grid or dot pattern. Round the corners or make it a circle for avatar slots. Save it as PNG, JPG, WebP or a tiny SVG, copy it straight into another app, or copy it as a data URI to paste into HTML or CSS.
Need a whole set? List the sizes, or add a ready set such as all the social media sizes, and download every one in a single ZIP. Nothing is uploaded: the images are drawn by your browser on your device.
How to use Placeholder Image Generator
- Type a “Width” and “Height”, or choose a size from “Preset”. The swap button flips portrait and landscape.
- Under “Background”, choose Solid, Gradient or Radial and set the colours, or tap a quick colour pair.
- Under “Text”, leave “Label” empty to show the size, or type your own words. Pick a font, colour and text size.
- Optionally add a pattern and choose Rectangle, Rounded or Circle under “Pattern and shape”.
- Choose PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, then press “Download”, “Copy image” or “Copy data URI”.
- For many sizes, open “Make many sizes at once (ZIP)”, add sizes and press “Download ZIP”.
Leaving the label empty on a 1080 × 1350 Instagram portrait gives an image that reads “1080 × 1350”. Typing “Hero photo {w}×{h}” on a 1920 × 600 banner gives “Hero photo 1920×600”. A plain grey 1200 × 630 PNG comes out at around 40 KB, and the same image as SVG is under 1 KB.

Tips and good to know
- Use SVG for web mock-ups: it is tiny, sharp at any size and can be pasted as a data URI. Use PNG when the image is going into a design app or slide deck.
- An SVG label uses the font by name, so on a computer without that font it shows in a similar fallback font. Pick PNG if the exact font matters.
- Very large images such as 8,000 × 8,000 are too big for browsers to draw as PNG, JPG or WebP. Choose SVG for those, which has no pixel limit.
- Keep a little contrast between the background and the text colour so the size label is easy to read in screenshots and reviews.
- Data URIs for big, detailed images get long. For anything over a few hundred kilobytes, download the file and link to it instead.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Every image is drawn by your browser on your own device, and downloads are saved straight from the page. AroraTools never sees your designs.
Is it free? Are there limits?
It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. Each side can be up to 8,000 pixels, PNG, JPG and WebP images can have up to about 16.7 million pixels, and a batch can hold up to 60 sizes.
Does it work on a phone and offline?
Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome, Firefox and Samsung Internet on Android. After the page has loaded, you can keep making images without a connection.
What is a data URI?
A data URI is the whole image written as text, starting with “data:image/…”. You can paste it into an HTML img tag or a CSS background instead of a file address, which is handy for quick prototypes and emails.
Why can’t I make WebP in my browser?
Some older versions of Safari can show WebP images but cannot create them. When that happens the tool tells you and saves a PNG instead, so you still get a working file.
Can I use these images in commercial work?
Yes. The images are generated from your own settings and the bundled fonts are under the SIL Open Font Licence, which allows commercial use. There is no watermark or credit required.
