About this tool
Symbols & Special Characters is a searchable library of the symbols people actually go looking for: the degree sign, a tick or cross for a checklist, ©, ® and ™, currency signs from the euro to the bitcoin, arrows, fractions, superscript numbers, maths operators, Greek letters, accented letters and box-drawing lines. Type what you want in plain words, such as “degree”, “tick”, “half” or “pound”, and tap the symbol to copy it.
Every symbol has a details panel with its official Unicode name and code point, the HTML entity and numeric codes for web pages, the escape you need in CSS and JavaScript, and, where one exists, the Windows Alt code and the Mac Option-key shortcut. We only list keyboard shortcuts that are standard; for symbols without one, copying is the reliable way.
Building a string such as “✓ Done → 20 °C”? Switch to “Tap to collect” and each tap adds to your collection, ready to copy in one go. Your recently used symbols stay at the top on this device, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to use Symbols & Special Characters
- Type in the search box, for example “degree”, “tick”, “copyright”, “euro” or “arrow”, or tap a group such as Currency or Fractions.
- Tap a symbol to copy it. A message confirms it, and it joins “Recently used”.
- Read the details panel for its name, Unicode code point, HTML entity, CSS and JavaScript escapes, Alt code and Mac shortcut. The small copy buttons copy each code.
- To build a string of several symbols, choose “Tap to collect”, tap them in order, then press “Copy all”.
- Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows, ⌘V on a Mac, or a long press on a phone.
Searching “degree” puts ° first. Its panel shows U+00B0, the HTML entity °, the CSS escape \00B0 and the JavaScript escape \u00B0, the Windows code Alt + 0176 and the Mac shortcut ⌥⇧8 (Option, Shift and 8).

Tips and good to know
- Alt codes need the number pad on the right of a full keyboard with Num Lock on. On a laptop without one, copy the symbol from here instead.
- Mac shortcuts listed here are for the US keyboard layout. On a British Mac keyboard, £ is Shift+3 and € is Option+2.
- On a web page, the HTML entity (©) and the numeric code (©) give the same result. Numeric codes work for every symbol, even those with no named entity.
- Some newer or rarer symbols may show as an empty box on older phones and computers. That means the device’s fonts lack the symbol; the character itself is still correct.
- Want the coloured emoji version of ✔ or ❤? Many apps switch to emoji style automatically. For plain text style, choose the lighter versions such as ✓ and ♥.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything I copy sent or saved online?
No. The whole library is part of the page and runs in your browser. Copying uses your device’s clipboard, and your recently used symbols and collection are saved only in this browser.
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free with no sign-up and no limit on how many symbols you copy or collect.
Does it work on iPhone, Android and offline?
Yes. Tap a symbol to copy it, then long-press where you want it and choose Paste. Once the page has loaded, search and copying keep working without a connection.
How do I type the degree symbol?
Copy it here, or type it directly: Alt + 0176 on Windows with the number pad, Option + Shift + 8 on a Mac, and on most phone keyboards press and hold the zero key.
What is the difference between ✓ and ✔?
They are separate characters. ✓ is the check mark and ✔ is the heavy check mark, which some apps draw as a coloured emoji. For a checklist in a document, ✓ is the safer plain choice.
Why does a symbol show as a box or question mark?
The font on that device has no drawing for the symbol. The character is still correct and will appear properly where a suitable font exists. Choosing a common symbol from the Popular group avoids this.
