About this tool

Text to Handwriting turns typed text into pages that look written by hand. Paste an essay, notes, a letter or a poem, choose a handwriting style, the paper and the pen, and the preview shows the finished page straight away. Long text flows onto as many pages as it needs, and you can save every page as a picture or all of them as one PDF.

What makes it look real is the small stuff. Each letter is placed on its own with a tiny difference in lean, height and size, the line rises and dips a little as a real hand does, the gaps between words vary, and the ink is a shade darker or lighter from word to word, like a pen pressed harder or softer. The text sits on the ruled lines rather than floating between them. The “Natural variation” slider sets how neat or loose the writing is, and “Write it again” gives the same text a fresh set of differences.

The paper is drawn, not photographed: wide-ruled, loose-leaf with a red margin line, a yellow legal pad, grid or plain, in A4 or US Letter, with an optional paper texture. Everything is made in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded.

How to use Text to Handwriting

  1. Type or paste into “Your text”, or press “Paste”. Blank lines become gaps between paragraphs.
  2. Under “Handwriting”, tap a style, then pick the ink: “Blue pen”, “Black pen”, “Red pen” or “Pencil”.
  3. Choose the “Paper”, “Line spacing”, “Page size” and “Margins”. Adjust “Letter size” and “Natural variation” until it looks right.
  4. Optionally tick “Name and date at the top of each page” and fill them in, or “Paper texture” for a photographed look.
  5. Use the arrows by “Page 1 of …” to check each page, then press “Download PDF”, “PNG of this page” or “All pages as PNG (ZIP)”.
Example

A 600-word essay in Caveat on wide-ruled A4 at 100% letter size fills about four pages. “Download PDF” gives one four-page file; “All pages as PNG (ZIP)” gives four 1,654 × 2,339 pixel pictures, the size of A4 at 200 dots per inch.

Features

  • Four handwriting styles, from neat everyday writing (Caveat) to joined-up script (Dancing Script), round lettering (Pacifico) and bold marker capitals.
  • Natural, seeded variation in every letter, word gap, baseline and ink shade, so the preview and the download always match.
  • Five paper styles drawn in the browser: ruled, margin line with punched holes, yellow legal pad, grid and plain.
  • Blue, black and red ballpoint ink, and a soft grey pencil.
  • Writing lines up with the rules at wide (8.7 mm), college (7.1 mm) or narrow (6.35 mm) spacing.
  • Automatic wrapping and pagination in A4 or US Letter, with three margin widths.
  • An optional name and date written at the top of every page, and an optional paper texture.
  • Download one page as PNG, every page in a ZIP, or all pages in one PDF.

Tips and good to know

  • For the most convincing page, keep “Natural variation” between 35 and 60. Higher looks rushed; zero looks like a font.
  • Pick “Narrow” line spacing and a smaller letter size to fit more on a page, as with tight school handwriting.
  • Use “Write it again” if one word looks odd: it changes every small variation without touching your text.
  • For a printout that looks like a real notebook page, use the margin-line paper with the paper texture switched off, then print the PDF at actual size.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded or saved anywhere?

It is never uploaded. The pages are drawn by your own browser. Your current text is kept in this browser’s storage, so it is still there if you reload, and Clear removes it.

Is it free, and is there a page limit?

It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. There is no fixed page limit; very long documents just take a few seconds longer to save as PDF.

Does it work on my phone, and offline?

Yes. The page works on phones and tablets, and once it has loaded it needs no connection. On a phone, the preview sits under the options.

Can I use my own handwriting?

Not yet. The styles are open-licence handwriting fonts bundled with the site, made to look less regular by the variation described above.

Which languages and characters work?

All four styles cover the Latin alphabet with its accented letters, and some also cover Cyrillic or Vietnamese. A character a style lacks, such as an emoji, is drawn in a plain fallback font.

Is it okay to hand this in as homework?

That depends on your teacher. If an assignment must be written by hand, a printout of this is not that. It is best for practice sheets, journaling, mock-ups, invitations and notes where the look is what matters.
