About this tool

A custom thumbnail is the first thing people see of your video, and YouTube wants it wide: a 16:9 shape. For years the standard size has been 1280 × 720 pixels, and it is still what most creators upload. It is sharp on phones and laptops and a comfortable file size.

This page opens Crop Image set to “YouTube Video thumbnail · 1280 × 720”. The crop box is locked to 16:9, the result is saved at exactly 1280 × 720 as a JPG, and if a busy picture would come out over 2 MB the tool lowers the JPG quality a step at a time until it fits. Two megabytes is the limit for thumbnails uploaded from the YouTube mobile app; YouTube’s help page, checked on 8 October 2026, allows up to 50 MB from a computer and now suggests up to 3840 × 2160 for videos. Want 4K? Type it into “Save at exactly”.

Use a still from your video, a photo or a design you made elsewhere. The picture is cropped in your browser and never leaves your device.

How to use YouTube Thumbnail Size (1280×720)

  1. Tap “Choose images” or drop your picture on the box.
  2. Check the note above the tool: 16:9, 1280 × 720 px, JPG, under 2 MB. “Social size” already shows the YouTube thumbnail.
  3. Drag the 16:9 box over the part you want and pull its corners to include more. Use “Straighten” if needed.
  4. Press “Crop image”. The result line shows the size, format and file size.
  5. Press “Download image”, then upload it in YouTube Studio under Thumbnail.
Example

A 3000 × 2000 photo becomes a 1280 × 720 JPG of roughly 250 to 600 KB: you choose a 3000 × 1688 slice and it is scaled down to the exact size.

Features

  • Opens set to YouTube’s 16:9 thumbnail, saved at exactly 1280 × 720 pixels.
  • JPG at high quality, lowered only if needed to stay under 2 MB.
  • Warns when your crop is smaller than 1280 × 720, so the picture would be enlarged and look soft.
  • Straighten up to 45° either way, with thirds or grid guides for placing faces and text.
  • Crop several frames at once if you want options to choose between.
  • Any other size is still available, including YouTube’s 2560 × 1440 channel banner.

Tips and good to know

  • Keep important text and faces away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video’s length.
  • Thumbnails are often seen tiny on phones: big faces and three or four words of large text read best.
  • If you choose PNG under “Save as”, the 2 MB cap is not applied; the result line warns if the file is over.
  • Need to add a title on top? Crop here, then press “Add text” to carry the image into Add Text to Image.

Frequently asked questions

Is my picture uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser crops and saves it on your own device. Nothing is sent to AroraTools or anyone else.

Is it free? Are there limits?

Yes, free, with no sign-up and no watermark. You can crop up to 50 pictures at a time.

Does it work on my phone, and offline?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on iPhone and Android. The page needs the internet to open; the cropping itself happens on your device.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

16:9. 1280 × 720 is the long-standing standard and keeps files small. YouTube’s help page, checked on 8 October 2026, suggests up to 3840 × 2160, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.

What is the file size limit for thumbnails?

YouTube’s help page lists 2 MB for thumbnails uploaded from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. This page keeps the JPG under 2 MB so it works either way.

Why is my thumbnail blurry?

The area you cropped had fewer than 1280 × 720 pixels, so it was enlarged. Use a bigger picture or a wider crop; the tool shows a note when this happens.
