About this tool

Mind Map Maker turns loose thoughts into a picture you can take in at a glance. You start with a topic in the middle, press Tab to grow an idea out of it and Enter to add the next one beside it, and the map lays itself out as you type: main topics share out evenly to the left and right, every branch gets its own colour, and smooth curved lines join each idea to the one it came from. Nothing ever overlaps, however big the map gets, because the layout is worked out again after every change.

It suits students planning an essay, teams brainstorming a project, writers sorting chapters, and anyone who thinks better on a page than in a list. Drag ideas to move whole branches, fold finished parts away, and switch between four colour sets or a top-down tree.

Everything happens in your browser. The map is kept on this device only, so closing the tab does not lose it, and nothing is sent to us. No account, no watermark, no limit on ideas.

How to use Mind Map Maker

  1. Select the centre topic and press F2 (or double-tap it) to type your subject, then press Enter to keep it.
  2. Press Tab or “Add inside” to grow an idea from the selected one, and Enter or “Add next” to add one beside it. Keep typing: each new idea opens ready for text.
  3. Move around with the arrow keys or by tapping. Drag an idea onto another to move it, with everything inside it, to that branch.
  4. Use “Fold” (or the small button at the end of a branch) to tuck a finished branch away; the badge shows how many ideas it holds.
  5. Pick a “Layout” and “Colours” under the map, and zoom with the wheel, a pinch, the − and + buttons or “Fit”.
  6. Under “Save”, choose PNG, SVG or PDF (with a page size), or save the map as Markdown, plain text or OPML.
Example

Typing “Holiday” in the centre, then Tab “Budget”, Enter “Places”, Enter “Packing” gives three coloured branches; Tab under “Places” adds “Kyoto”. The PNG comes out at twice screen size, sharp on a slide.

Features

  • Keyboard-first: Tab adds an idea inside, Enter one beside, F2 or simply typing edits, Delete removes, arrows move between ideas, Alt+arrows reorder.
  • Our own tidy-tree layout: both sides, all to the right, or a top-down tree, with no overlapping ideas at any size.
  • Tapered curved branches, one colour per main branch, long ideas wrapped over several lines.
  • Drag and drop an idea and its whole branch onto any other idea; fold branches with a count badge.
  • Four colour sets (Night, Day, Soft, black-and-white Print) or “Match site” for light and dark mode.
  • Pan, wheel or pinch zoom, Fit, undo and redo up to 200 steps, and automatic saving on this device.
  • Build a map from an indented outline, a Markdown list with # headings, or an OPML file.
  • Save PNG (2× sharp, optional see-through background), SVG with real text, PDF (A4, US Letter or fitted page), Markdown, text or OPML.

Tips and good to know

  • Writing fast? Press Tab while typing an idea to save it and start the next one inside it.
  • Paste a bulleted list from your notes into the Outline box and press “Build map from this text” to skip the typing.
  • For printing, pick the Print colours and a PDF page size; wide maps turn the page sideways.
  • The autosave lives in this browser only. To move a map to another device, save it as Markdown or OPML and open it there.
  • Press Esc, then Tab, to move the keyboard out of the map.

Frequently asked questions

Is my mind map uploaded anywhere?

No. The map is drawn and saved inside your browser on this device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else, and the files you save are made on your device too.

Is it free? Are there limits?

It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no cap on maps or ideas. The outline importer reads the first 2,000 lines of a file, which is far more than a readable map needs.

Does it work on a phone, iPad or offline?

Yes. On touch screens use the button row: tap to select, double-tap to type, drag to move ideas or the view, pinch to zoom. Once the page has loaded it works offline, except that PDF saving needs its maker downloaded the first time.

Will my map still be here tomorrow?

Yes, in the same browser on the same device: it saves itself after every change and says “Saved on this device”. Private windows and clearing browsing data remove it, so save a file of anything important.

Can I open the map in XMind, MindNode or another app?

Save it as OPML, the outline format most mind-map and outliner apps can open, or as Markdown. Both keep every idea and its place in the tree; colours and folding stay here.

Can I edit the SVG in Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape?

Yes. Ideas are saved as real, editable text and the branches as vector lines. Apps without the Onest font use a similar system font instead, so line lengths can shift slightly.
