About this tool

Mute Video deals with the sound in a video and leaves the picture exactly as it was. Add one video or several, choose what should happen to the sound, and press the button. Each finished video shows its size before and after, plays right on the page, and can be downloaded on its own or all together in one ZIP.

Removing the sound is lossless and fast: the picture is copied packet for packet into a new file of the same kind, so there is no re-encoding, no blur and no waiting, even for long videos. Many online muters quietly re-encode the whole video; this one doesn’t.

Need something gentler than silence? “Make it quieter” keeps the original sound at a level you choose, which is handy for background chatter or wind noise. “Replace the sound” puts another audio file under the picture instead, such as a song, a voice-over or the sound from another video, cut to the video’s length or looped to fill it, with an optional fade at the end. All of it happens in your own browser: nothing is uploaded.

How to use Mute Video

  1. Tap “Choose videos” or drop one or more videos onto the box.
  2. Pick “Remove the sound”, “Make it quieter” or “Replace the sound”.
  3. For quieter, set the level with the slider. For replace, press “Choose the new sound”, then pick looping, volume and fade.
  4. Press the button (for example “Remove sound · 3 videos”) and watch each row show its new size.
  5. Press “Play” on a row to check it, then “Download” it, or download them all as a ZIP.
Example

Three phone clips from a windy beach, 48 MB in total: add all three, keep “Remove the sound” and press the button. A few seconds later each row shows its new size, such as 18.2 MB → 17.6 MB, and the ZIP holds three silent MP4s with the picture untouched.

Features

  • Lossless mute: the picture is copied as it is, never re-encoded.
  • Works on several videos in one go, with a ZIP of the results.
  • Shows each file’s size before and after.
  • Keeps the original kind of file where possible: MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV, WebM stays WebM.
  • Turn the sound down instead of off, from 5% to 100%, with the level in decibels.
  • Replace the sound with music or a voice-over from an audio file or another video.
  • Loop a short track to fill the video or play it once, set its volume, and fade it out over the last two seconds.
  • Videos that already have no sound are spotted and skipped.

Tips and good to know

  • Removing the sound usually makes the file a little smaller, because the sound track is gone. The picture, which is most of the size, stays the same.
  • For a background track, try the new sound at 60% to 80% so it doesn’t overpower the picture.
  • A short loop sounds best when it starts and ends on the beat. The tool adds a tiny fade at each repeat to stop clicks.
  • Want a voice-over to start later? Trim silence onto its start in an audio tool first, then use it here.
  • If a row shows an error, the other videos still finish. Try that file in Chrome or Edge on a computer.

Frequently asked questions

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser does everything on your own device. Your videos and any music you add never leave it.

Is it free, and are there limits?

It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark, and you can add as many videos as you like. The only limit is your device’s memory, so very large files are best done on a computer.

Does it work on my phone, and offline?

Yes on recent phones: iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, and Android with an up-to-date Chrome. The page needs the internet to open, but the work happens on your device.

Does muting reduce the video quality?

No. The picture is copied exactly as it is stored, so it is identical to the original. Only “Make it quieter” and “Replace the sound” create new sound, and even then the picture is untouched.

What happens if my music is shorter or longer than the video?

Longer music is cut at the end of the video. Shorter music either loops until the video ends, with a tiny fade at each repeat, or plays once and leaves the rest silent; you choose.

What sound format does the new track use?

AAC where your browser can write it, which plays everywhere. Firefox has no AAC encoder, so there the new track is Opus, which modern players also handle.
